Trump’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), established by former U.S. President Donald Trump to slash government budgets and reduce federal staff, has been quietly dissolved with eight months remaining on its scheduled mandate. Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Director Scott Kupor confirmed that DOGE “does not exist” anymore, and many of its functions have been absorbed by OPM.

Created with much fanfare at the start of Trump’s second term and initially led by tech billionaire Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy, the department was tasked with driving large-scale structural reforms and cutting costs. Despite claims that the department saved billions through layoffs and program cuts, it never provided transparent accounting, sparking skepticism about the actual savings achieved.

The closure followed months of internal strife, including a high-profile feud between Trump and Musk, leadership turnover, and concerns among former staff about potential legal repercussions. Key DOGE officials have since moved into other influential government roles, such as advisory and technology leadership positions in various federal departments.

The dissolution was kept quiet to avoid undermining Trump’s campaign promise to reduce government waste and to avoid scrutiny over DOGE’s controversial actions and unverified claims. The move marks the end of one of the administration’s most ambitious but controversial efforts to restructure the federal government.

This initiative was initially praised for its boldness but criticized for poor transparency, intense layoffs, and strained relations with federal agencies. The end of DOGE also coincides with the lifting of the hiring freeze it had promoted, signaling a rollback of its aggressive policies.
