According to statements from both Washington and Beijing, the leaders discussed a wide range of important issues. These included trade relations between the two countries, the ongoing conflict sparked by Russias invasion of Ukraine, the challenge posed by fentanyl flowing into North America, and the sensitive matter of Taiwan. April Trump China Visit Set After High Level Call With Xi
China released its own statement through the national news agency, explaining that both sides agreed to maintain momentum and continue working together based on equality, respect and mutual benefit. The message emphasized a desire for stability and progress in the Trump China dynamic, especially after a period of significant tension. The two leaders last met in Busan in South Korea in October. That meeting led to a temporary truce on tariffs. At the time, the United States agreed to cut one of its twenty percent tariffs in half in an attempt to reduce the flow of fentanyl. Although several tariffs were adjusted, the overall tariff rate on Chinese goods still remains close to fifty percent. China stated that the relationship between the two countries has stayed on a stable and positive track since the Busan meeting. Officials also noted that the international community has welcomed this shift. In the weeks that followed, the United States withdrew its earlier threat to impose one hundred percent additional tariffs on Chinese goods, and China postponed its plan to implement new restrictions on rare earth exports. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt explained that the recent call between Trump and Xi lasted about an hour and was heavily focused on trade matters. Leavitt said that both sides were satisfied with recent progress and expressed optimism about the future direction of Trump China engagements.
While trade was a key subject, the conversation also touched on global security concerns. Xi emphasized to Trump that the return of Taiwan to China is essential to what Beijing considers the correct post war international order.
