Spain began their European World Cup qualifiers a bit late but have since won their last five matches. They have scored 19 goals across these games without conceding any. Their latest triumph was a 4-0 victory against Georgia, putting them close to securing a spot in the 2026 World Cup.
The 2010 World Cup champions showed their usual aggression at the Boris Paichadze Dinamo Arena in Georgia on Saturday. Despite Lamine Yamal’s recent injury and tension involving Barcelona, Spain’s performance remained strong. Mikel Varzabal scored twice, while Martin Zubimendi and Ferran Torres each added a goal.
Spain vs Georgia, currently unbeaten in 30 competitive matches, controlled 57% of possession and had 15 shots on target. Georgia managed only two shots on target from four attempts and failed to score. Spain opened the scoring in the 11th minute after a handball by a Georgian defender led to a penalty, which Varzabal converted.

Zubimendi then doubled the lead in the 22nd minute, scoring after a pass from Fabian Ruiz. Before halftime, Torres added a third goal assisted by Varzabal. Georgia’s goalkeeper, Giorgi Mamardashvili, made a crucial save to prevent further damage before the break.
Georgia struggled to threaten Spain’s goalkeeper until the 60th minute when they sent a ball to Unai Simeone. However, Spain quickly responded as Varzabal scored his second goal in the 63rd minute, heading in a cross from Torres, sealing a commanding win for Spain. (Source)
With this win, Spain remains top of Group E in the World Cup qualifiers, having won all five of their matches for a total of 15 points. A win or draw against Turkey in their final match or even a loss by fewer than seven goals will secure their qualification for the World Cup as group winners.
Turkey sits second with 12 points, Georgia third with 3 points, and Bulgaria yet to earn any points. The group runner-up has a chance to qualify through the playoff stage.
