Nvidia and Abu Dhabi Launch First AI and Robotics Research Lab in Middle East. Abu Dhabi is set to become a major hub for artificial intelligence and robotics as the Technology Innovation Institute (TII) partners with Nvidia to launch a cutting-edge research lab in the United Arab Emirates. Announced on Monday, this collaboration marks the first Nvidia AI Technology Center in the Middle East, combining TII’s multidisciplinary research capabilities with Nvidia’s advanced AI models and computing power.
The joint lab will focus on developing next-generation AI models and robotics platforms, exploring applications across critical sectors such as climate, energy, genomics, transportation, and logistics. Researchers will leverage Nvidia’s state-of-the-art GPU chips, including the newly introduced Thor chip, to power advanced robotic systems. This will support the development of humanoids, four-legged robots, and robotic arms, pushing the boundaries of automation and machine intelligence.
Najwa Aaraj, CEO of TII, emphasized the strategic importance of the partnership, noting that the Thor chip will enable sophisticated robotics projects that were previously unattainable. “It is a chip that allows us to advance robotics research in unprecedented ways,” Aaraj explained. “This collaboration with Nvidia will help TII expand its capabilities and explore AI applications that can have a transformative impact on multiple industries.”

TII operates under the Advanced Technology Research Council, a UAE government initiative aimed at establishing Abu Dhabi as a global AI leader. The country has invested billions of dollars in AI research and development, positioning itself as a major technology hub in the region. By joining forces with Nvidia, Abu Dhabi is aiming to accelerate its innovation goals and ensure access to some of the world’s most advanced AI technology.
The UAE has maintained strong ties with the United States, securing partnerships that allow access to cutting-edge technology, including Nvidia’s high-performance computing solutions. During a Gulf visit by former U.S. President Donald Trump, the UAE signed an agreement to build one of the world’s largest data center hubs in Abu Dhabi, highlighting the nation’s commitment to scaling its AI infrastructure. Although security and geopolitical concerns have delayed some aspects of the project, the collaboration with Nvidia remains a key step forward for the region’s AI ambitions.
The new research hub will house teams from both TII and Nvidia, with plans to expand staff to accommodate the growing scope of the project. The lab will focus not only on robotics and AI modeling but also on real-world applications that can enhance efficiency, safety, and productivity in various sectors. By combining TII’s local expertise and Nvidia’s technological leadership, the center is poised to become a regional leader in AI innovation.
This partnership between Nvidia and Abu Dhabi underscores the UAE’s vision to emerge as a global AI and robotics powerhouse. The lab will explore solutions that integrate advanced AI with practical robotics applications, making it a cornerstone for innovation in the Middle East and beyond. With this strategic collaboration, the UAE aims to attract international talent, boost technology research, and contribute to global advancements in artificial intelligence.
