Protesters in Portland, Oregon, showcased the city’s trademark mix of humor and defiance on Sunday, taking to the streets wearing little to nothing in an “emergency” edition of the World Naked Bike Ride to protest the Trump administration.
The spontaneous event unfolded amid ongoing demonstrations outside the city’s immigration detention facility, where crowds have gathered daily to oppose federal actions. Protesters, known for embracing Portland’s quirky spirit, donned inflatable frog, unicorn, banana, and axolotl costumes as they faced off with federal agents armed with tear gas and pepper balls.
Organizers said the hastily arranged Naked Bike Ride was a symbolic protest against President Donald Trump’s proposal to deploy the National Guard to quell unrest in the city.

“This is a quintessentially Portland way to protest,” said Janene King, 51, who rode naked except for wool socks, a wig, and a hat. Unfazed by steady rain and chilly 12°C (mid-50s°F) weather, she sipped tea and added, “We definitely do not want troops coming into our city.”
The cyclists rode through the streets toward the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) building, where authorities warned them to remain on sidewalks or risk arrest.
The ride took place as the city awaited a federal appeals court ruling on whether Trump could deploy federalized troops, following a judge’s temporary suspension of the plan earlier in October.
Organizers emphasized the peaceful and joyful nature of the event, writing on Instagram:
“Joy is a form of protest. Being together with mutual respect and kindness is a form of protest. It’s your choice how much or little you wear.”
While the wet weather kept many riders partially clothed, some still bared all, wearing only helmets as they pedaled through the streets.
The World Naked Bike Ride, a Portland tradition since 2004, typically draws thousands each summer to promote body positivity, environmental awareness, and freedom of expression but this year’s surprise edition added a powerful political message to the mix.
