The Israeli military has launched a ground offensive in Gaza City, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) announced on Tuesday. The operation, which began overnight, involves two divisions with a third expected to join. This marks the next phase of Israel’s ground campaign in Gaza City the largest city in the Gaza Strip following an earlier offensive that started earlier this month, military officials stated.
Gaza City
Last week, Israeli authorities ordered all residents of Gaza City to evacuate, warning they would conduct operations there “with great force.” IDF spokesperson Avichay Adraee emphasized on social media that remaining in the city was “extremely dangerous.” It remains unclear how many civilians are still inside. At the Holy Family Church, officials told ABC News they continue to shelter there and have no plans to leave.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s

The escalation in Gaza City comes shortly after U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s visit on Sunday and Monday, during which he met privately with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Following their joint press conference on Tuesday, Rubio reiterated U.S. support for Israel’s objective of destroying Hamas.
In response, Hamas accused Netanyahu and Israel of ruining all prospects for a ceasefire or a resolution that could secure the release of hostages. The organization claimed that the U.S. was fully aware of Israel’s actions. However, Rubio, speaking briefly as he departed Tel Aviv, stated that the U.S. remains committed to pursuing a negotiated end to the conflict. He warned that the opportunity for a deal is very limited, possibly just days or weeks.
