Valencia’s regional president, Carlos Mazón, has announced his resignation, declaring, “I can’t go on anymore,” after facing what he described as “brutal” public criticism over his handling of the deadly 2024 floods.

In a statement at the Palau de la Generalitat Valenciana, Mazón acknowledged mistakes made during an “unprecedented” crisis, while criticizing the central government for failing to provide sufficient support to the flood-stricken region.

I hope that when the noise dies down a bit, society will be able to distinguish between a man who has made a mistake and a bad person,” he said, as reported by El País.

Mazón did not clarify whether he would call a snap election or relinquish his seat in the regional assembly a move that would strip him of parliamentary immunity, Reuters noted.

Further developments are expected as journalist Maribel Vilaplana, who was with Mazón at lunch on the day of the disaster, testifies before a judge investigating possible criminal negligence by regional authorities over the flood-related deaths. (Source)
