Moldova election results show a decisive win for the country’s pro-European ruling party, marking a turning point in its bid to strengthen ties with the European Union and distance itself from Moscow’s influence.
According to official data released on Monday, the Party of Action and Solidarity (PAS), led by President Maia Sandu, secured 50.2% of the vote, defeating the Russian-leaning Patriotic Bloc, which won 24.2%. The outcome is seen as a major boost for Sandu’s government, which has consistently campaigned on promises of reform, democracy, and closer integration with the EU. European leaders quickly welcomed the results. Antonio Costa, president of the European Council, congratulated Moldova for choosing “democracy, reform, and a European future in the face of pressure and interference from Russia.” France, Germany, and Poland also issued a joint statement praising the peaceful conduct of the election despite what they called “unprecedented interference by Russia, including vote-buying schemes and disinformation.”

For President Sandu, this result represents one of the most important victories since Moldova’s independence in 1991. Her government had described Sunday’s vote as the most consequential election in the country’s modern history.

Moscow, however, rejected the accusations of interference. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said it was up to Moldovans themselves to determine whether the process was fair, pointing out that some opposition groups were already alleging violations. Russian officials also accused Moldova of restricting the participation of its diaspora in Russia by providing only two polling stations for hundreds of thousands of Moldovan citizens living there. Leonid Slutsky, head of the Russian parliament’s international affairs committee, went further, accusing the Sandu administration of “blatant falsifications” and claimed Moldova was being pushed “down the path of Ukraine.” Despite the controversy, many citizens expressed optimism. In the capital, Chisinau, 18-year-old first-time voter Ana-Maria Orsu said she was encouraged by the large turnout among young Moldovans. “I think we have a bright future ahead of us,” she said on Monday morning. The Patriotic Bloc, led by former president Igor Dodon, has rejected the results and called for protests, alleging violations and manipulation. Government officials, in turn, maintain that Russia attempted to sway the vote with disinformation campaigns and cash incentives. The Moldova election results underscore a decisive shift in public sentiment. With a majority secured, PAS is now positioned to accelerate reforms and deepen its European integration efforts. Neighboring Ukraine also welcomed the outcome, with President Volodymyr Zelenskiy saying the vote showed that Moscow had failed in its attempt to destabilize Moldova. For many Moldovans, Sunday’s vote was not just about choosing a government—it was about choosing a future. And with PAS securing a clear mandate, that future increasingly appears to be aligned with the European Union.
